jenepel: (Thinking Rory)

I just watched the Season 2 episode of Everwood where everyone finds out that Linda Abbot has HIV. I just cannot believe what an incredible show it is. It brings up these huge issues, and then it handles them with such delicacy, such subtlety. It never makes anything easy on it’s characters, but the drama doesn’t overwhelm the personal stories. I can’t even count how many of the episodes have made me cry, which sounds ridiculous, but it’s not because things are overdrawn. It’s because the writers manage to find the point in every issue that will appeal to you both emotionally and intellectually. The characters don’t always react in the smartest or most logical way, but they always react in a true way. It’s a show with so much sadness that it should be depressing, but instead it’s very uplifting. And it uses the familial drama and relationships to fantastic effect. The small moments it has; for instance in this episode Ephram’s freakout at his dad over the fact that he and Delia only have one parent now, and thus he isn’t indispensable. And the fact that the relationship between he and his father has grown such that Dr Brown takes that into account. The conversation between Linda and Delia on the couch, with Ephram behind, and the tiny tiny change on his face as he takes it in. It’s not just the writing, but the acting as well. I just can’t say enough in defense of the show. It’s so overlooked in the face of other WB dramas (hello: 7th Heaven) and I can’t believe it never got more exposure than it did. I’m so glad I still have over a season that I haven’t seen,

I just hope I still feel the same way in the wake of the Madison pregnancy storyline, which I know is coming up and am completely dreading. Nothing kills a sensitive drama faster than a pregnancy storyline!

I wish I had an Everwood icon, but I can't be bothered to search for one right now.

Also, I worked on the Rory summary for the VS today and totally got excited about it all again.  I had kind of put it by the wayside, so it felt good to be actually thinking about it properly once more.
