Heroes 2.01

I tried to post this earlier in the day via email, but evidently it didn't work. Good thing I sent myself a copy!
So I finally got to watch Heroes Wednesday night. Here’s hoping next week I only have to wait a day instead of two! (Talk about need for instant gratification – 10 years ago I would have had to suck it up and wait until next year when the BBC showed it. Ah well. Progress!) I was actually quite pleased with the episode. I was a little worried, because it’s always hard to watch that first episode after the summer break; you expect so much because you’ve been building it up in your mind. I think the easiest way to review is by storylines, since they are pretty disjointed right now. It usually takes until longer in the season before they intersect. There probably isn’t much here that hasn’t already been said by everyone else, but oh well. I felt like writing it out.
I’m so glad that TV is back so I can start writing recaps/reviews again. Although now that I think about it, the only things I am watching are Heroes and HIMYM, and I hadn’t really planned to do the latter. The others that I used to review (GG, VM) are done. I suppose I could review the virtual season, but that might be weird.

Claire, HRG, Bennets/Butlers – I almost always love Claire storylines, firstly because she has an awesome power, and secondly because I am just a sucker for HS stories. Plus, you get HRG, so that’s always a bonus. I don’t really mind the new guy, he’s okay, but I really do miss Zach. I’m sad that now we’ll pretty much for sure never see him again. Evidently they felt the need to give her a love interest, but I hope they work on his character beyond that. It’s always dangerous when someone is introduced and you just know their main function is to hook up with someone else – I mean it’s obvious from his first scene that they’ll end up dating. Whereas with Zach there was that nice ambiguously gay twist, and thus he got to be the supportive friend instead. (Although I think sometimes that niche can be just as bad.)
Twins (Maya/Alejandro) – This definitely looks like a promising storyline. Her power is freaky – especially the idea that she can’t control it. We haven’t had tons of examples of that becoming a purely negative thing, really just Ted. Everyone else has a power that is not life-threatening, even when it’s a bit out of control. I mean what is Claire going to do? Heal herself to death? (Okay, I typed that and then immediately started thinking of ways it could happen – like maybe her skin is growing to heal over a cut on her chin and it keep growing over her mouth and she chokes to death. Huh.) Anyhow, back to the twins! There is a lot of speculation going on in the Heroes forums over whether he actually has a power that cancels her out or is just a calming influence and thus she’s less likely to use it. Probably the former, but you never know. It’s cool that twins would have intersecting powers.
Nathan – Eh, he’s a drunk. He had better get over it. Than again, he just lost Milo (ahem! Peter!), so who wouldn’t be terribly depressed?! I know I would be crying. ;0)
Matt/Mohinder/Molly – The only thing really bringing his storyline up for me is Molly. I am totally loving her; she’s such a precocious kid. I know everyone is down on Matt (ok, forums again) and I try not to be but it’s hard. His story is just so boring. But his power is cool. And he’s Grunny! So he’s forgiven. I really really can’t wait until Mohinder gets back – I want to see the three of them hang out. Speaking of Mohinder, it’s pretty awesome that he’s working with HRG.
Hiro/Kensai – This has the potential to be really interesting or really annoying; at this point I feel like it could go either way. It’s helped along by the fact that both Kensai (ok – I never watched Alias) and Hiro are fun characters, but I am going to miss the Ando/Hiro interactions. (Will Ando disappear now? What will they do with him?) I really want to get a better idea of where in Japan they are, just because I used to live there and I like things to be well located. We’ll see if they go into that detail or not.
The parents – I was completely unspoiled except for promos, so the one thing I did know was that someone was going to die. I wasn’t overly worried; I figured it wouldn’t be anyone too major. And okay, I guess the loss of Papa Nakamura is a big deal, but I didn’t really care for the character, so I’m eh. I’m also just really glad that they didn’t kill Mama Petrelli, and I was worried for a while there. Of course now that he’s dead, I guess she’s not out of danger. I’ve always liked her (despite, or because of, her scheming?) but now I have added interest invested in her because she’s me (or I’m her?) in the HMM! So yeah, I really hope she doesn’t die anytime soon.
Peter – [fangirl] Um, shirtless Milo! Yay! *Squees* [/fangirl] Right, so not much to say here since his scene was really just a teaser. We had better get more info next week though!
And where, oh where, is Sylar? And I know it’s not for several episodes, but bring on the Kristen Bell storyline!

Date: 2007-09-28 09:52 pm (UTC)I love Matt. He's a sweet guy. Boring? Well, kinda, but not too bad. And Grunny is awesome.
Petrelli - oh, Drunk!Devastated!Nathan breaks my heart. I just... I want to comfort him. And he's living in Peter's apartment and wearing his clothes. And sleeping in his bed. The little "You're evil, Ma" totally got to me. But Peter's alive! Except he doesn't know he's Peter! He needs his Nathan! He needs to stay shirtless! Oh, that last part may just be me.
I wasn't thrilled with the Hiro/Kensei storyline. Maybe it'll get better with time. I hope so.
