So it's all about the transport stories today. I was writing this entry in my head during my commute to work this morning, and I kept thinking of more and more things to report, all of which seemed to be in some way connected to London transport or things I had seen while on it. Weird. Or perhaps, as Aleks told
basilm and I when we were in Athens, we are just unable to stop thinking or talking about the London transport system? She said it was boring...here's hoping you don't agree!
So, first of all on the bus this morning I saw two things which will be the beginning of my list of interesting transport items:
1. A kid with an Atlanta Braves hat on. Every time I see someone wearing some sort of US sports paraphenalia, I really really want to stop them and be all "so, how are the Braves doing this year? Tough season huh?" or something like that, just to freak them out. And I'm sure some of them are fans, but this kid totally wasn't - it was one of the big hats, and the brim was totally flat, and it was just so completely a trend thing that I got annoyed. And don't worry and think this is limited to people over here. If I see someone in the States with a football jersey or something I feel the same way, and actually I'm more likely to approach them about it since I actually know something about football (a bit!) and plus Americans are easier to approach as a stranger like that. (Don't even get me started on how I feel if it's a ManU jersey and they claim to "know" the team.) So yeah, annoyed.
(Speaking of football, I watched Man Utd v. Chelsea last night with Shahid, which was interesting. We've got a truce or whatever, but that was the most time we spent together since all the crapstorm over the flat. But I wanted to see the match, and he was already in there, so what could I do? Stupid Ronaldo btw. How I really really wish that Terry didn't slip (poor Terry! I love him) so that idiot Ronaldo had that loss on his shoulders. I'm not a Chelsea fan, but if you take individual players I like more of them, so that's where I was pulling. And penalties! Yay! I love them when I don't care.)
Okay sorry about that minor football diversion. So.
2. I saw a sign on the bus advertising the fact that we were about to be smoke-free. Now that happened almost 11 months ago, so perhaps TFL should update their signs more, but where it did bring my mind was to:
3. The fact that we are soon about to be banned from drinking on public transport. It's not like this is something I really ever take advantage of, but it just seems a ridiculous rule to me. And the poor underground people having to police it! Stupid Boris. Although
basilm might be pleased to note this sentence, "The ban will also apply to trams and the Docklands Light Railway but not suburban rail services," which I assume means our wine and cheese train journeys to my parents house are still safe!
So, the next section is on fashion, as over the past two days I've seen more than just that A's cap to make me cringe.
4. Last night on the tube, bubble-shorts. Let me explain. Remember bubble skirts from the 80's? I had one, I'm sure some of you did too. So this was a SPLIT bubble skirt. Like they had sewn up the middle to make it into shorts. Okay, kinda like coulottes (which I also had a ton of btw) but not quite. Instead it was the flimsy material of a bubble skirt and there was much more of it. Plus? It was electric blue. Ghastly.
5. Last night on the bus, weird cut-out jean things. I started to try and explain them in words, but it was totally failing me, so I had to resort to a picture, which you have already seen. I'm not a great artist, but I think you get the point. And that section in the middle is a SKIRT - it's hanging free, and quite short. I think it was the weirdest thing I've seen out in public on a person right in front of me.
6. It's gonna seem tame after that last one, but this morning on the bus I saw a woman in what looked like a cheerleader skirt. I'm pretty sure she was just on her way to work, but she had on a black pleated skirt with two different colours of purple stripes at the bottom and then black leggings with purple leg warmers, above (of course) ballet flats. To top it all off she had a matching purple v-neck sweater. Strange.
7. And, as if magically summoned by all the bad fashion (come on!) this morning I thought I saw Chloƫ Sevigny waiting for the tube. I'm sure it wasn't her, but it gave me quite a start. And she was even dressed right, kind of hippyish with old 80's sunglasses on. Freaky.
Wow, so I think that's all I've got. Weren't those some lovely tube/bus anecdotes? If they weren't, I don't care, don't tell me!

p.s.
filo77 if you're out there, I'm so sad that you appeared not to see the picture I posted just for you a few entries back. Go look! Caaaaaaake.

Date: 2008-05-27 10:19 pm (UTC)Also in love with userpics, like totally addicted. I looked at yours, and I like the Absolut Texas one. And then I realised that I really really needed one of the Absolut Hersey ad like you gave me (which is framed and in my room, btw) so I made one! Look! Cool huh?

Date: 2008-05-28 06:14 pm (UTC)P.S. I meant to mention this last time, but wow, you've read a lot of books! I knew you read, but I didn't know you went through so many so fast. This is sad, but I've only read one novel this year -- and that was Harry Potter. I bought it last year when it came out but I only got around to reading it this year. Oh well!
