2008: The Year in Pictures

So here's one I've had sitting half finished in a google doc for like a month now. Nothing like housecleaning, huh?
I know it's mid-Feb but I'm putting it up anyways because I like things recorded for posterity! It should be the best of the 12 of 12, but I only started in October, so for the rest of those months I just picked one picture from what I had in my files. It comes off a bit as an album of the traveling I did, but ah well. I tried to stick in some shots of things as well as people. My first inclination is to have all people pictures, but I think non-people ones are also interesting and change it up a bit.
January: Cat and Jared (front seat) were still in-country waiting for their visa, and my brother was visiting. Here we are driving to Birmingham to attend our annual Villa match.

February: My birthday! A rather epic night that ended in bagels at 5AM. Here are Phil & I doing Scottish dancing. You can see Andy and Anna in front of us as well.

March: This picture was taken on Rach's bday weekend, which she never lets me forget I missed, despite my very good excuse! I was in Germany with River and Ina - yay for meeting internet friends in the flesh. We stayed in Stuttgart at Ina and Tobias's place. This is on a day trip - that's Neuschwanstein behind us.

April: Maggie and Drew at their wedding in Chicago! This was my first Stateside trip of the year (of two) and my first wedding (of three). They are awesome people and match up so well it's amazing. I miss them. This was the best wedding I've ever been to, and a very epic night, as my brother and I didn't get back to the hotel (and our room) until 9AM the next morning, just in time to change quickly and run down to brunch.

May: This is Rach and I in front of the Parthenon, part of our trip to Athens to visit Aleks. Too bad the scaffolding makes it a little less pretty.

June: Picnic and kite-flying on Hampsted Heath! I ignored a group shot in favour of this one of Rach and Seb getting the kite up. Look at that lovely blue sky - the weather that day was perfect. The pictures of this day, especially in light of our recent crappy weather, really make me yearn for summer.

July: Watching the Dr Who season finale on the big screen at London Pride 2008! Jessie and her sis and I were sitting on the steps of Trafalgar sqaure, and this was our view. It's so awesome that they actually showed it and people watched. They also had Freema there to announce. Very cool.

August: This is my favourite picture that I took on the Turkey trip. This is upstairs inside Ayasofya, in Istanbul.

September: A great picture of us. It's Rach and I with the "London for Obama" sign the very first day we used it! Here we are campaigning along the Thames to register voters. After that day this sign went so many places with us. Sadly (and I don't think I ever told this story on here) it met a mysterious end. The night of the inagauration we had a party at our house to watch and celebrate. The estate agent sign is still outside our house, on a big pole, so we just put the Obama sign over it, thinking it would be a great way to show new guests where our house was. Well the very first girl that came got a surprise as a guy was taking it down when she got there. She asked if it was our house, and he said (rudely) that he didn't know who we were. Then he just turned and took the sign into his house, next door! She rang our bell, the story was explained, we were baffled. We don't know any of our neighbours (thank you London) although we've exchanged passing pleasnatries with a few people on the street. Well Seb (in full tux, hee) went next door to ask about it and politely ask for it back. The guy wouldn't answer the door! He could plainly see they were home, lights etc, but they just ignored him. So that was very very weird. The end of the Obama sign...

October: This is the first picture truly coming from a 12 of 12. It's Elizabeth (
outforawalk) and I when she was in London to see Tennant. Good times. I had also just gotten a haircut, which looking back on I'm not crazy about. She didn't cut the fringe thick enough, because (as usual) she didn't believe me when I asked for it. And it could be shorter than it is. It had been pretty long before this, so I guess she was scared. Why do hairdressers never think you want what you say you do?

November: So Nov was a busy month, what with Nano and my trip to Costa Rica for Kristen's wedding. But since this is 12 of 12 I don't have a picture of that stuff. Instead here are Rach and Nimbus, relaxing. Look how freaking adorable Nimbus is. (Oh, and Rach is okay too, I guess.) I suppose she might be working on her novel? Then this would at least count as a Nano pic!

December: Another Nimbus one to round out the year. Here he is, meeting his first Christmas tree. He's timid here, but he knocked it over many times after it was up and decorated.

That's all folks!
I actually can't believe I didn't finish this up earlier. It was almost done, so I just had to tweak a few things really quickly. Typical! Life has gotten semi-busy again, in a social way. As in, I actually have things going on after work and stuff, which is nice but makes me scramble. I'm having dinner with a few people this week and next who I haven't seen for months, so that's great too. And my bday is in a week (next Tues) so I'm trying to plan stuff for the weekend after. I mean I have a half plan but I need to see if we need reservations and such. Also, we're diving back into couchsurfing again, so I updated my profile last week. We have two girls coming tonight for about four days, and then a maybe for a guy next week. I'm kind of excited to begin all that again. And yet, despite all that excitement, I've been seriously up and down lately. I'm not sure what's up with the constant moodiness, but I'm really ready to stop feeling so crappy and down on myself. For now, I'm blaming it on the weather and time of year.
We're on hiatus for the virtual season and I didn't even realise it! That's crazy, because usually I seem to be counting down to it. So maybe that's a sign that I'm feeling more in control of it all? I feel good about deadline reminders, and better about promos, and I finally sent out my big email, which was a bit anti-climatic. So for once there is nothing hanging over me there, which is great.
I've been listening to nothing but country music for the last week because
insanityjones keeps making me mix CD's. It's been pretty great actually, rediscovering some songs from my childhood and then also hearing a bunch of brand new ones. I've subjected my housemates to some of it too, so that makes me happy.
Okay back to work...

The photo from Ayasofya is lovely, I can't wait until I get out to Istanbul.
